Confidence and Corrections: How We Make and Un-Make Up Our Minds
Single neurons in several brain areas intervening between sensation and action signal the accumulation of sensory evidence favoring a particular behavioral response. Two new studies show that these same neurons encode decision confidence and that decision makers continue to process relevant sensory information even after a choice has been made.
متن کاملFunctional Connectomics: How Maggots Make Up Their Minds
How Drosophila larvae select one behavior or a sequence of behaviors, and then persist in the final one, has been addressed by a powerful combination of electron-microscopy reconstruction of neuronal connections, genetic manipulations, electrophysiology, and neuronal modeling. Surprisingly, reciprocal inhibitory synaptic connections are major players in choosing, sequencing and maintaining beha...
متن کاملHow parts make up wholes
We propose a schema that characterizes how parts constitute wholes at diverse levels of organization, ranging from the atomic to the biological to the social. This schema of tags, organizers, attachers, and communicators provides a unified understanding of the structure, function, and dynamics of organization in physics, biology, and the cognitive and social sciences. We use this schema to iden...

Fresh evidence about how cells in frontal cortex make decisions has come from experiments in which information is partly withheld from them.
متن کاملHow do we make Scholarship Semantic?
I am grateful for the opportunity to comment on the opportunities and challenges of using semantic approaches in scholarly publishing. (“Scholarship” covers many fields of endeavour and should extend beyond the ivory tower of academia.) We were asked to provide crazy ideas and a polemic, where arguments are backed by personal conviction as much as proven experience. The primary aim of a polemic...
